&lt;p>We use distance so naturally that we rarely stop to ask what it actually means.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>A table is two metres long.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>A person is 1.7 metres tall.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>The Moon is about 384,000 kilometres away.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>The Sun is about 150 million kilometres away.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>These statements feel fundamental. We tend to imagine that the universe somehow contains an invisible three-dimensional ruler, with lengths already built into space.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>But nature contains no metre marks.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>There are no kilometres painted between the Earth and the Moon.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>The &lt;strong>metre is a human unit&lt;/strong>.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>So a deeper question appears:&lt;/p>
&lt;blockquote>
&lt;p>&lt;strong>What is distance before we introduce metres, feet, kilometres, miles, or any other human-created unit?&lt;/strong>&lt;/p>&lt;/blockquote>
&lt;p>And an even deeper question follows:&lt;/p>
