Three Types of People

In our personal, social, political, and spiritual lives, there are broadly three kinds of people.

These levels are not fixed. They change from situation to situation, and from one part of life to another. The same person can be the first kind at work, the second kind in politics, and the third kind in faith. Each kind meets suffering and joy in a different way.

Those who do not understand

#

These people do not see why something is happening around them, or inside them.

Sometimes they say so honestly: I do not understand. Sometimes they tell themselves that they do understand, when they do not. The second habit is harder to notice, because the person is no longer looking.

Those who understand, but will not say it

#

These people do understand. They still speak against what they see.

The cause is not a lack of facts. It is bias, habit, fear, loyalty, or some other conditioning of the mind. They know one thing and say another. That is intellectual dishonesty.

Those who understand, and then stop

#

These people understand, and they can explain. Then they hold the explanation so tightly that the explanation becomes the whole of life.

They forget that life also has a side beyond understanding and logic. Joy and suffering are not finished when the reason is named. An explanation can be true and still be too small.
